The Great Central Railway has been awarded a 'six-figure' grant from the East Midlands Development Agency to finance a feasibility study into its 'Bridging the Gap' project. The grant, made available through Charnwood Borough Council and Leicester Shire Economic Partnership, enables a consultants'study into linking the GCR with the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) to create a 17-mile railway.rnThe key element is construction of a new bridge over the Midland Main Line, providing main line access to the Leicester end of the GC. The GCR has to raise a third of the funding to complete the study.rnConsultants were expected to be appointed by the end of March.rn"This is the culmination of much behind-the-scenes work by a lot of people from the railways on both sides of the 'gap'," said Tony Sparks, a director of GCR and GC Link. "The feasibility study will prove our arguments about economic benefits to the region, but convincing commercial partners to join us will be a massive task."
