Nymr Launches ￡1m Appeal

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has launched a 'Bridges and Wheels' appeal to raise a million pounds. The majority of the cash - estimated at between ￡650,000 and ￡700,000 - is needed for major work on bridge 30 (RM May 2007). This is reckoned to be the last season the bridge can remain in use without restriction and the work must be undertaken next winter. Bridge 30 is a 100ft span steel bridge carrying the NYMR 70ft above the River Esk, north of Goathland, on the 1865 'deviation'.rnThe work centres on dealing with structural girders installed during a 1908 NER refurbishment. The historic appearance of the structure will be retained. Detailed drawings for the upgrade, which will have a design life of 125 years, are still being undertaken.rnThe'wheels'element of the appeal is to cover the ￡350,000 needed to overhaul NYMR-Owned 4MT 2-6-4T No. 80135, the ticket of which expired in late-2007.
