France to defy EU order

France has indicated that it would not comply with a demand from the European Commission that SNCF be transformed into the equivalent of a public limited company.rnThe French Government has told the commission that it wants the matter handled by an EU tribunal. Commented Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau: "It's out of the question that SNCF's public enterprise status be modified." In July 2008, the EC decreed that any country providing unlimited State guarantees must remove them within a period of two years.
