The biggest renumbering scheme since the introduction of TOPS in 1973 is about to take place - and it could start as early as this year, writes Phil Marsh.rnEvery main line locomotive, multiple unit, carriage and wagon in the country is to be given a new computerised number - expected to be 11 digits long - as a result of new European legislation for the standardisation of rolling stock across the Continent.rnThe changeover is expected to eventually bring an end to familiar loco class terms such as 47 and 66.rnClass 66 No. 66001 would, for example, become No. 92700066001.
