HST smashes record forfastest-ever journey from Cardiff to London

AS this issue closed for press on October 26, a First Great Western HST broke the record for the fastest known authenticated non-stop run between Cardiff and London Paddington. The'Capital to Capital'special, a shortened formation HST conveying invited stakeholders including Railway Magazine Practice & Performance writer John Heaton, reeled off the 145miles in just 96min 9sec at an average speed of 90.5mph. The pre-existing Railway Performance Society Record was 97min 37sec by a Fishguard boat train in 1988. Full details will be printed in the next issue.
