'Duchess'gets its cladding and padding

THE overhaul of LMS'Duchess' No. 6233 Duchess of Sutherland reached an important milestone last month when the boiler underwent a successful steam test at the engine's base at Butterley. This meant that the reassembly stage recommenced in earnest once the boiler insulation padding and cladding was completed on October 16. The boiler was reunited with the frames the next day and once the engine is back in one piece then slow-speed running in tests will commence in the owner's headshunt. This will be followed by 1,000 miles covered at slow speeds within the confines of the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley before a light engine main line test run takes place in January, if all goes well.
