MIKE Crowhurst is no ordinary rail enthusiast, more a man with a mission. As chairman of Railfiiture for seven years, he has been one of the leading lights in the constant battle to ensure that Britain's railway network is protected from those who would see it damaged or eroded. Railfiiture is a 'watchdog' group, dedicated to monitoring, campaigning... and blowing the whistle on developments it considers harmful to the services the nation currently enjoys, both passenger and freight. The organisation grew out of the Railway Development Society, which had its roots in campaigns against the closures of the 1950s and 1960s. There were originally two pressure groups - the Railway Development Association and the Railway Invigoration Society - and on October 1, 1987, they merged to form the Railway Development Association, which in 2001 chose Railfiiture as its campaigning name.
