It is hard to believe that the launch of Network SouthEast occurred a quarter of a century ago. To this day, all of us who worked for NSE remember it as both the most enjoyable and the most intensive eight years of our careers. NSE was a railway in a hurry. It was created in British Rail's 'Indian summer' as one of its brave new business sectors and had to demonstrate results quickly. It was also born in an economic boom when we were racing to meet an unprecedented growth in commuting. And we were, of course, ever aware of the approaching shadow of rail privatisation.
