The Government is to create a huge electrified commuter network in the western Home Counties by extending 25kV wiring west of Airport Junction to Didcot, Oxford and Newbury.The work is expected to be completed within six years. Although there was disappointment over the shelving of the full-scale electrification of the Great Western Main Line, the fact that the wires will extend partway along the Paddington-Birmingham and the Berks & Hants routes as well as the GWML proper augers well for the future. It is unclear whether the initial scheme will include theThames Valley branches to Marlow and Bourne End, Henley and Windsor & Eton Central.
