Three landslides caused by flash floods have closed the Par to Newquay line for several weeks. Torrential rain on November 17 washed the line away at two sites at Pontsmill and one at Rockmill viaduct, and at one time, Network Rail had 25 staff working around the clock to clear the debris and work on the repairs. Excavators have been used to move large boulders that landed on the line, and some sections of embankment have needed to be rebuilt with wire mesh, before concrete is sprayed on by a small team who had to abseil down to the damaged location. NR re-opened the line on December 7, earlier than planned.
