Fire suppression system for ChannelTunnel

Eurotunnel has confirmed that it is installing and testing a fire suppression system in the Channel Tunnel. The move follows heavy criticism after a fire aboard a lorry shuttle in 2008 that damaged 650 metres of tunnel and led to one of the six'intervals' inside the tunnel being closed for five months while repairs were carried out. The system is part of a safety initiative called the Salamander Project and follows 31 recommendations aimed at Eurotunnel in the blaze inquiry report. The trial fire suppression system, manufactured by Fogtec, has been installed over an 800-metre area in the two bores and is based around a high-pressure system that creates a water mist.
