Virgin to re-form some Voyagers

Virgin Trains is to re-form two four-car Class 221 'Super Voyagers'to provide greater flexibility on Birmingham-Scotland and London-North Wales services. Virgin has a fleet of 21 Class 221s, of which three are four-car sets and 18 five-car sets, but this has been affecting flexibility and causing overcrowding.In addition, bogie overhauls have been reducing the number of sets available. To remedy the situation and meet the 12 per cent year-on-year passenger growth Virgin is experiencing, one four-car set will be disbanded, and the two trailer vehicles added to the other two four-car trains to give Virgin a fleet of 20 five-car Class 221s. Set No.221144 will be the donor unit and its two driving cars will be placed into warm storage.
