Britain's largest locomotive builder was the North British Locomotive Company, which came into being on April 1, 1903 through the amalgamation of three formerly rival locomotive builders in Glasgow - Neilson, Reid & Co, Dubs & Co, and Sharp, Stewart &Co. Although a merger had been mooted previously, it was finally prompted by perceived competition regarding overseas markets posed by the rapid rise of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in the USA, which had already resulted in numerous smaller manufacturers there joining forces to form the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1901.
