摘要

IN the 1970s, a retired Hawthorn Leslie draughtsman recalled having to assist a team of colleagues in the frantic re-design of a South America-bound 2-6-2T as a 2-6-4T, after the first loco (upon completion) was found to be grossly over-weight The reason? The weight of water in the side tanks had been overlooked in the original design calculations! The picture on the right doesn't depict that incident but was found in our archives with no caption details. It is thought to be at Crewe, but can any reader help explain this clearly embarrassing incident.
