In addition to the factories, featured on the previous pages, there were a number of large and important locomotive works on the UK railway network that operated only as heavy repair shops and several continued to be extremely active well into the British Railways era, being equipped to carry out overhauls and often even rebuilds of large main line steam locomotives.
