It is no surprise that train operators are scrutinising fuel costs to see what savings can be made. Energy is one of the few areas of expenditure that they can directly influence and its price is rising disproportionately to other expenses. The bad news is that it is going to get worse. European tax harmonisation, lower emission requirements, supply difficulties and changes to the chemical composition of fuel will all add to the already steen. Upward trend.
