Bowes'lottery fund wagon shop application clears first hurdle

The Heritage Lottery Fund committee for the North East has given the Bowes Railway's application towards restoration of the wagon shop at its Springwell site a first round pass for £338,100, including a development grant of £24,100 -89% of the project cost.Dating from the1850sandthe largest building on the site, it was originally a coal bunker for the nearby colliery. When the pit closed in 1932 it was converted to a wagon repair facility and houses original plant and equipment associated with that work, but has fallen into serious disrepair to the point where it is becoming dangerous.
