FGW buffet car conversions get underway

Two projects that will increase the seating capacity on First Great Western services are well underway atWabtec's plant in Kilmarnock. With a target date for completion by July, work to convert 15 redundant Mk 3 buffet cars to high-density standard class carriages is progressing well, even though it is a complex coversion. The vehicles had been in use with FGW previously, but were then stored at Eastleigh. When they first arrived at Kilmarnock, they were gutted internally. Next, using a special jig clamped to the body side, the small windows at the buffet counter end of the carriages have been opened out to match the size of the other windows.
