The 71/2-mile branch from Shirebrook to Thoresby is the last surviving stretch of freight-only line in an area once criss-crossed by colliery branches and connecting lines. It is used by GB Railfreighthauled coal trains from Thoresby colliery to Cottam, which take the east-to-north side of the Shirebrook triangle, and, less frequently, by DBS-hauled coal trains from Thoresby to Ratcliffe, which take the east-to-south curve at Shirebrook.
