Although many footplatemen learned their trade'on the job', the railway companies were keen to try to instil some formal education regarding best practice and locomotive science. From Victorian times onwards, therefore, they published many booklets containing advice and drawings for the benefit of employees who wanted to better themselves. There were also a number of privately-published books on the subject, which tended to be much thicker and more detailed.
