Chinese steam falling away

The steam scene in China is changing rapidly. As well as Sandaoling (see feature on page 46), standard gauge operations are retained at Baiyin, Fuxin, Pingzhuang and Yuanbaoshan, as well as several other small scale operations. The narrow gauge steam lines are also changing, although both Shibanxi and Rongshan may well thrive as domestic tourist attractions; now that steam is becoming history, the Chinese public is beginning to realise its potential! The search for previously unknown active depots in remote places has increased, with new locations found by Chinese enthusiasts. The news spreads via the Internet and also among the few Chinese tour companies that specialise in steam trips.
