The Brazilian Government has postponed the tendering process for the US $16.4bn, 511 km-long high-speed rail project linking Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Only a French consortium (which included Alstom and SNCF) had been ready to bid, but the Brazilian government says that Spanish and German companies are now also planning to bid and the deadline has thus been extended by at least 12 months to enable those firms to prepare their tenders. A previous tender process in 2011 was cancelled because no-one offered bids.
