Railcare sold to German company

As reported in a stop press item last month, Railcare's Wolverton and Springburn works were placed into administration after the collapse of their proposed sale to German company Knorr-Bremse Rail. More than 150 of the 350 workforce were made redundant across the two plants as the administrators, BDO, sought to keep the business afloat - and on August 26, it was announced that they had succeeded in reopening the talks and had sold the firm and its assets to Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Ltd. The new owner is an established German train component supplier, operating worldwide with a turnover measured in billions of euros. Although it wasted no time in re-branding the plants (see picture), it says it intends to operate them as a specialist company with its own identity. Its existing UK subsidiary already has a contract to supply braking systems for Britain's IEP Class 800 trains.
