LOCOMOTIVE TRAVERSER BUILT AT FELIXSTOWE DOCKS

Felixstowe port's new north terminal (see story, left) has been equipped with a 30-metre long traverser to enable locomotives of up to 170 tons to run round their trains. Manufactured by Mechan in Sheffield against tough opposition from a Dutch contender, it is the first traverser at a UK port and allows arriving locos to be released from any of the port's nine arrival/departure lines. The photo shows Freightliner Class 70 No. 70001 being moved. Traditionally, traversers in Britain have been mainly restricted to locomotive and carriage works, although a few terminal stations were once equipped with small ones. Picture: MECHAN
