Argentine Government takes over rail freight company

Argentinian metre-gauge network concessionaire and freight operator Belgrano Cargas was placed under government supervision for three months in October. The move followed a decision by the Argentine government to temporarily take over control of the nearly 7,400km network that connects Argentina to both Chile and Bolivia, and operates the Belgrano Cargas freight concession. The metre-gauge network has lacked investment in recent years; only 5,052km of the 7,347km network is operational. Freight traffic has declined significantly, from 1.74million tonnes in 1999, when the concession was let, to an estimated 750,000 tonnes this year.
