INTRODUCTION TO THE SERIES

Why do heritage railways, almost without exception, harbour ambitions to extend their running line? There are many reasons, but perhaps the foremost is the desire to complete unfinished business. It takes time and cash to revive a disused, derelict or long-closed railway. Somewhere along the path towards the final goal comes a time when consolidation is required to establish the initial operation and to build locomotive depots, carriage sheds, museums and so on. Once that is done, eyes will turn back to what was probably the initial ambition... and if the existing line was part of a branch, then reconstruction of the remainder will be a prime objective.
