Work begins on new Lincoln High Street footbridge

Construction of a footbridge over the High Street level crossing in Lincoln has started. It is the first of two new footbridges planned for the city as part of overall safety improvements for pedestrians. Network Rail has had to buy property next to the crossing to enable the construction of the new footbridge.The building will be remodelled to include fully accessible lifts as well as stairs. The project has involved months of collaboration between English Heritage, City of Lincoln, Lincolnshire County Council, University of Lincoln, business leaders and local MP Karl McCartney. Phil Verster, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "High Street and Brayford level crossings are among our worst crossings for instances of misuse. Residents, visitors and businesses in Lincoln will benefit from the footbridge, which will improve safety and mean far less people will have to wait to cross the railway."
