PLANS LAUNCHED TO EXTEND BAKERLOO LINE

Transport for London has launched a public consultation on extending London Underground's Bakerloo Line from Elephant & Castle towards New Cross, Lewisham, Bromley and Hayes. London's population is expected to reach 10million by 2030, and the extension would be aimed at helping support growth and regeneration in the south-east of the city. It would also release capacity on the national rail network, enabling more services to operate into London Bridge. The cost of the extension is estimated at upto £3billion. The route options have been identified to areas that are currently less well-served by public transport.The proposed extension would run through a tunnelled section from Elephant & Castle to Lewisham, from where there are two possible routes via Old Kent Road or Camberwell and Peckham. Beyond Lewisham, the line could then link onto the Network Rail line to Beckenham Junction and Hayes via Ladywell and Catford.There is also an option to extend further to Bromley town centre.
