Two major changes to the HS2 plans are being proposed by the project's leader, Sir David Higgins. He is recommending that the Manchester leg is altered to run via Crewe, with a huge hub station being built there by 2027. And on the eastern leg of the 'Y'- to Sheffield and Leeds - he says the plan to build a major station next to the marshalling yard at Toton could be scrapped in favour of a location a couple of miles to the west, at Breaston, near Long Eaton. The latter would, says Sir David, enable better connectivity with the M1, the Midland Main Line and the Nottingham-Derby passenger line, whereas the proposed Toton site currently lies adjacent to a north-south freight-only line.
