German national operator DB has reverted to using older electric locos on some InterCity routes as it awaits delivery of new train fleets. DB has new 'Traxx' electric locos on order, together with new double-deck InterCity trains, plus Class 407 ICE, and the new ICx EMU trains, for long-distance services. Few of the trains are in service yet (eight Class 407 ICEs are operating). In the case of ICx, they are not due for delivery before 2016/17. Loco types that were officially replaced several years ago are now back in use in small numbers, and even some locos dating from the late 1950s are being overhauled for express passenger work.
