Maud Railway Museum has received a f 54,000 Heritage Lottery Fund award towards restoration of a 'convict carriage'. The vehicle, dating from around 1915, carried convicts over the Government railway from the Admiralty yard, near Peterhead prison, to granite quarries at Stirling Hill, where inmates worked to extract stone for the works. The line used four carriages constructed at the prison, which was built to provide labour to construct the port's breakwater.
