Caltrain celebrates 150th anniversary and gets ready for electric trains

Caltrain is celebrating the 150th anniversary of passenger services on the San Francisco peninsula. The company operates commuter rail services southwest from San Francisco to San Jose and Gilroy. The railway was opened by the San Francisco & San Jose Railroad in January 1864 and, 150 years later, Caltrain has celebrated the anniversary in January 2014. When it opened, the railway reduced travel time between the two cities to three and a half hours, compared to eight hours by paddle steamer and stage coach. Today, Caltrain operates semi-fast services known as "Baby Bullets" that take just 57 minutes!
