Peer over the ledge of Gasworks tunnel looking south and you'll see two familiar characteristics: Cubitt's double barrel-roofed King's Cross trainshed and Barlow's red brick St Pancras International. But there's something far less recognisable about what's sprung up in the slither of land between the two grandiose termini. From 1924, this site was occupied by an LNER locomotive stabling point, at whose northern extremity was a turntable on which Gresley Pacifics and other icons of the steam age would often be photographed. At the dawn of the modern traction era, a single-road diesel depot was erected on the site and 'Deitics' and their kin continued to grace the King's Cross servicing point until closure in the early 1980s.
