LU power station upgrade

Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced in January that six new natural gas engines will be installed at the 110-year-old Greenwich power station to provide additional power to London Underground and help cut carbon emissions. The engines are due to come on stream in 2017, after which they will provide 13% of LU's annual power requirements by 2025, while reducing emissions by 60%. London Underground owner Transport for London is the largest consumer of electricity in London, and the move will "bear down on the operating costs of the tube", according to LU's managing director Mike Brown. Greenwich power station was built in 1906 and is one of the oldest operating stations in the world. It is currently used as a back-up for powering the Underground if the National Grid goes down.
