The 65 new carriages that are to be built by CAF in Spain for the TransPennine franchise will be funded by Beacon Rail. In addition to the 19 Class 802 bi-mode trains from Hitachi, and 12 five-car EMUs that CAF will build, this order for 65 additional carriages will see them formed into five-car sets - four trailer and one driving trailer. Motive power for the carriage rakes will be in the form of DRS Class 68 locos, which Beacon Rail also financed. In a throwback to the 1980s, when Class 45 and 47 locos worked the TransPennine route, the loco-hauled trains are due to enter traffic initially on the Manchester/Liverpool to Newcastle route in 2018.
