Despite a concerted media campaign highlighting the dangers and legal consequences of trespassing to witness the'A3; British Transport Police (BTP) still had just cause to arrest eight people on May 15 as Flying Scotsman toured the Borders. Four individuals were found within the boundary fence between South Gyle and Dalmeny, and the same number at Glenrothes, as 'Scotsman' ran north to Kirkcaldy. A 66-year-old man was interviewed by BTP on May 10 for a similar offence at Tursdale Junction, near Durham, during 'Scotsman's' York to Newcastle tour, although the incident had no ill effect on the operation of the railway. BTP officers also had to "escort 20 people to safety" who were trackside at Dunbridge, between Eastleigh and Salisbury, as No. 60103 was in charge of the May 21 'Cathedrals Express'. Delay minutes to other services added up to almost three hours as trains were signalled at caution past the affected area.
