The Tyne&Wear Metro completed a £3million track replacement programme in the tunnels under central Newcastle just before Christmas. Four kilometres of track was replaced from Jesmond to the Queen Elizabeth II Metro Bridge, which carries the Metro over the Tyne to Gateshead. The work was all carried out at night to avoid disrupting services on the busiest section of the system, and took place in stages between 00.00 and 04.30 when no trains are due to run.
