Berlin to Munich in under four hours as Angela Merkel opens new high-speed line

GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel officially opened the new high-speed line between Erfurt and Ebensfeld, in Bavaria (just north of Bamberg), on December 8. Passenger services started two days later with the fastest ICE trains taking just 3 hours 55 minutes to cover the 623km (387 miles) between Munich and Berlin, with stops in Nuremberg and Erfurt. The project to build a high-speed railway between Berlin and Munich started just after German reunification in 1990.
