Restyled Class 387s take over Heathrow Express

USE of the Siemens/CAF Class 332 Heathrow Express (HEX) sets came to an end on December 28 when the sets operated on their final duties after 22 years'use. Replacing the 14 sets - five sets were five cars, the remainder four - are a dedicated fleet of 12 four-car Class 387s drawn from the 45 sets delivered to GWR.The HEX sets are Nos. 387130-141. Entering service from December 29, these 12 sets have undergone a special internal refurbishment and external livery restyle for the airport work. Inside, the fleet has been up-cycled from the GWR style, with upgraded interiors fitted out to a high and exacting standard featuring the Heathrow Express purple colour scheme. Passengers will also have a more comfortable journey with more space for wheelchair users, double the number of toilets and a continuous gangway through the whole train which was not possible with the 332s. In addition, Business First passengers will enjoy worktables and extra legroom. There are USB plugs with every plug socket, making it easier for international passengers to charge devices while they travel. The trains also feature fast onboard 4G enabled Wi-Fi, which will work continuously across the Heathrow complex.
