Build more high-speed rail to deliver 'clean' transport, says rail group

A GROUP of industry experts has challenged the Government to invest in a nationwide high-speed rail network to help decarbonise UK rail by 2040. The High Speed Rail Group (HSRG) says a "transformative investment" in a national high-speed rail network is required to make rail the 'mode of choice' for inter-city travellers and create capacity for a doubling of rail freight traffic to take heavy lorries off the country's roads. HSRG adds that decarbonisation of the transport network could be achieved through the creation of a world-class public transport system consisting of a national high-speed rail 'spine; made up of a core network of dedicated high-speed lines integrated with upgraded, electrified and digitally signalled lines, reaching all regions and major cities, and starting with an extension of HS2 to Scotland by 2032.
