摘要

THE long-running saga over Network Rail's proposed demolition of a Grade-Ⅱ listed bridge in Oxfordshire is over after computer simulations were employed to find a solution. Extensive testing and modelling by NR has determined that the bridge can be retained for electric operation, but with a maximum speed of 110mph, rather than the planned 125mph. The lower speed limit is required as the contact wires have to dip to a lower than standard height to pass through the arched bridge. NR planned to replace the bridge with a higher structure as part of electrification work on the Great Western Main Line. This would have met current standards for electrified routes -a move fiercely opposed by local residents and heritage groups. As a result, Great Western Railway Class 80x trains have been forced to switch to diesel mode in the area, despite the 25kV AC overhead supply being energised for several years on either side.
