Aside from various other techniques aimed at keeping switches free of snow and ice, heating switches by means of electrical power has proved very effective. The level of technical sophistication of electric switch heating systems ranges from those turned on and off manually to systems controlled by temperature and humidity. Further development of such systems is aimed in particular at increasing their level of availability, further stabilisation of system operation via correct atmospheric data recording in conditions of drifting snow or hoar frost, optimisation of power consumption, reduction of repair work and modernisation of obsolete systems.%Weichen gehören zu den sensibelsten Elementen des Fahrweges. Wie wenig störanfällig könnte doch der Fahrweg der Eisenbahn sein, wenn es keine Weichen gäbe. Ein Traum vieler Eisenbahnverwaltungen! Aber leider: Ohne Weichen geht es nicht.
