Populist conspiracies against the people?

Conspiracy theories have been with us for centuries, but it doesn't feel that way. Rightly or wrongly—and there is some debate on the matter—there is a sense among scholars, journalists, governments and the general public that the present moment is marked by unusually high levels of paranoia, suspicion, and uncertainty. We live—at least, so the story goes—in the age of conspiracy theory. How did we get here? Perhaps more importantly, where are we going?
