Please don't ask to borrow my knife. I'm not concerned that you will break it or that I will have to sharpen it later—I'm just wondering why you didn't bring one to work with you. While a knife may be the least used piece of equipment, the near endless styles available give us enough choices for a very unobtrusive tool. If you find yourself stressing over the type of knife you need to carry on-duty, first find a small clip-on you can slide in your pocket that can be used in the most basic applications. These include the spring-loaded automatics, the thumb-assisted types that open on their own (after the blade passes a certain point in their arc) and those that require the thumb to carry the blade all the way to a fully locked position. Each type requires only one hand to open and close, and takes up space you weren't using anyway.
