Safety Concerns and Guidelines for Hostage and Crisis Negotiators

It would be difficult to initiate a discussion of safety issues without taking note of and understanding the relationship that exists between safety procedures and personal and situational awareness. All crisis situations are not alike. It is also true that interveners and negotiators develop individual styles in responding to crisis victims. Regardless of the situation and regardless of personal style, the negotiator must recognize that the potential for violence exists and that matters of safety and personal well-being must be dealt with as necessary.
