UK shipyard reopens

The cutting of the first steel for an oil platform at the Haverton Hill yard on Teesside, UK, was recently carried out. SeaDragon Offshore awarded the contracts for two state-of-the-art drilling rigs to the Tees Alliance Group, with the possibility of a third to follow. The hulls for platforms are being built in Russia with the Teesside Alliance Group - which includes Cleveland Bridge, McGill Services, and K-Home Engineering - building the topsides. The rigs have been designed to work in harsh conditions, and the first to be built at Haverton Hill, called Oban B, is scheduled to begin operating in the Gulf of Mexico in two years' time. This is the biggest non-military fabrication project to be undertaken in the UK for over a generation and will provide around 800 skilled jobs, together with opportunities for local specialist suppliers.
