According to ABB the growth in the use of electrical propulsion in the maritime sector is set to grow substantially up to 2020 as it becomes the propulsion of choice for a number of shipping sectors, says Juha Koskela, head of the Marine and Cranes business unit for ABB in Finland. The company made the break through into electrical propulsion with the development of AC electrical propulsion as long ago as 1983 and since then the company has made inroads into propulsion for cruise shipping which uses a lot of electrical power, particularly for the hotel section of the vessels, but the company is now looking to find new markets for its Azipod range of drives.
