General Dynamics wins future sub contract trio

General Dynamics Electric Boat was recently awarded three US Navy contracts totalling US$4.6 billion to design and develop the next-generation strategic deterrent submarine for the US Navy, and to continue construction and purchasing of materials for Virginia-class attack submarines. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.Under a five-year, US$1.85 billion 'Ohio Replace-ment Programme' contract, Electric Boat will undertake research and development work for a new class of ballistic missile submarine, the first example of which is due to start construction in 2021.In addition, Electric Boat will continue develop-ment of the joint US Navy/UK Royal Navy Common Missile Compartment for Ohio replacement submarines and the UK's 'Successor' type ballistic-missile submarine. The potential value of this contract is US$1,995 billion.
