APL has been testing fuel additives, which it says could reduce fuel consumption on its ships by as much as 10%. Two types of additive have been tested, one that reduces friction within the engine and the other is a water emulsion technology that increases the burn efficiency.Both additives are made by a Chinese subsidiary of the China Auto Corporation called Neftech and both use nanotechnology. According to Neftech APL tested the technol-ogy for six months and were so pleased with the results that they signed a five-year deal to supply additives for 50 ships. That deal is for the auxiliary engines only, however, tests on main engines are still ongoing.The additives are added to the fuel on a monthly basis, along with the lube oil, says Neftech.
