From the Overdrill to the PROXIMA

Representing an expansion of its Overdrill vessel concept, unveiled in 2013 (see Offshore Marine Technology Q3 2013, pl4), Fincantieri Offshore, a division of Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, has announced the creation of a new drillship design, dubbed PROXIMA, which is intended to grant offshore operators the ability to move into "previously unfeasible locations" whilst maintaining a high degree of efficiency. At its most basic, the Overdrill concept, launched collaboratively with Aker Solutions, sees the vessel designed around the drilling system, rather than vice versa. Fincantieri Offshore says that this strategy ensures optimal integration between the drilling system and the hull, as well as making it easier to design ergonomic, low-noise/vibration accommodation areas for crew.
